- Thermo Fisher Scientific recently launched its Vanquish Online 2D-Liquid Chromatography (LC) system, which offers versatility for multidimensional liquid chromatography.

The system offers a robust platform to characterize complex samples in-depth with the highest confidence and delivers peak identification and analysis for all types of analytes, including structural isomers, Thermo Fisher Scientific explained.

In pharmaceuticals, isomers have the same molecular formula but differ in configuration. An isomer version of an existing product may reduce side effects. This makes them more stable, effective, or less toxic to consumers.

Additionally, isomers can be patented separately, which allows pharmaceutical companies with "aging products” to obtain a new period of patent protection.

Laboratories in fields such as pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical research and development, food safety, environmental testing, omics, and polymer analysis can benefit from the flexibility of the Vanquish Online 2D-LC system.

"Confident, accurate and robust analysis is essential for difficult to resolve analytes in complex samples, such as biopharmaceutical formulations, fermentation broths or polymer materials," Frank Steiner, PhD, senior manager of product applications and scientific advisor of high performance liquid chromatography at Thermo Fisher Scientific, said in the announcement.

"The Vanquish Online 2D-LC system offers full peak characterization, with complete, automated and flexible workflows, allowing customers to expand their analytical capabilities while presenting a user-friendly experience,” Steiner continued.

2D-LC is a multidimensional separation technique to gain complete characterization of substances or peak purity confirmation. One compound is analyzed by two different separation modes to add more selectivity and resolve challenging analytes.

But there are different types of 2D-LC techniques and a number and storage of fractions.

For example, laboratories previously leveraged Vanquish HPCL or UHPLC systems, which required equipment for each analysis type. The Vanquish Online 2D-LC system eliminates the need for additional equipment with a single flow path located inside the system.

For best results, laboratories can combine 2D-LC with Dual LC in one system. Integrating the 2D-LC system with LC assays allows for improved sample throughput and increases overall confidence in results, Thermo Fisher Scientific highlighted.

Additionally, the Vanquish Online 2D-LC system has automated and complete workflow to boost sample analysis time, maximize sample integrity, and improve confidence in the results.

“The flexible, precise, and easy-to-use interface of the Vanquish Online 2D-LC system makes it ideal to characterize complex samples across a wide range of industries. Key applications include confident peak identification and purity analysis and legacy methods with UV detection and non-volatile buffer usage compatible with mass spectrometry (MS) detection,” a Thermo Fisher Scientific spokesperson said in the announcement.

Additional features and benefits of the system include vanquish dual split sample technology, which allows laboratories to switch between instrument usage without manual replumbing.

In September 2019, Thermo Fisher Scientific partnered with Cedars-Sinai to develop liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (LC-MS)-based workflows.

The workflows would allow research laboratories to deliver increased confidence in data while analyzing novel protein-based biomarkers within biological matrices.
